The Eco mark was introduced in 1991 by a notification of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The BIS operates the Eco Mark Scheme under the provisions of the BIS Act of 1986. The Central Government has laid down the policy that certain products shall be sold with Standard Mark under a licence or certificate of conformity (‘CoC’) from BIS. For the operation of the Scheme, BIS has added provisions for ECO Mark in the relevant Indian Standards. The terms and conditions about the operation of the Licence shall be by the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, Rules and Regulations made there under.
